Can i put a 4.3 in place of a 3.8 omc

i have a 1981 baja with a little 3.8 liter v6.Itspun a bottom bearing and i can not find parts for it anywhere.All the marine shops

laugh at me. So i want to big block it iwish but i was wonrding if i coud drop a 4.3 in it i know the gears are going to be differint.does that really mater? and reading some stuff on the internet the car motor will rev a lot higher .but will i get to fish out the summer with it. i woud be happy with that! please someone help!

You can use the 4.3 but there are a couple of things you should change to make it safe.Use all of the components from your 3.8 as they should bolt right on.(starter-altenater-distributor)You should use these because they are built for marine application.You may also need to change your prop because the 4.3 will rev higher.If you plan on using

    this motor for a few years you should change the frost plugs because

    in marine engines they use brass plugs so they will not rust out.Hope this helps you out and good luck.


  2. a car motor will not work without being "marinized". meaning cam and bearings, freeze plugs, starter, alternator, and a couple other things i cant remember. you'll be money ahead if you can find a marine 4.3, used in alot of boats since the eighties. outdrive gear ratio should be close enough to just adjust the prop if need be.
