Can i put a goldfish in a bowl?

If i get a small goldfish and put it in a 4L goldfish bowl with no filter and changed the water every two days will it be ok, because ive known people with goldfish in bowl and they lived for years.

By years, do you mean the 15-20 years many varieties of goldfish can live if given proper care and conditions? Keeping a goldfish alive for 2-3 years is about as impressive as keeping a cat or a dog alive that long.

Goldfish are an high-oxygen, high-waste fish, and require a lot of space to remain healthy. Even in 2 days in a bowl, the ammonia can build up very quickly. The smallest you should ever go even with 1 small goldfish is a 10g tank, and even then the tank will have to be upgraded as the fish grows. You'll need a good filter and aerator as well to meet your goldfish's needs.

Ok, my great granny kept 3 goldfish, 2 oscars, 14 guppies and an algae eater in a 1 gallon bowl.  She also dropped in an Efferdent along with her dentures to clean them at night.  The fish loved the bubbles and granny's teeth got cleaned.  The lived for 30 years, granny died and we buried the fish with her.  Who knows, the fish may still be alive but I don't care to dig up granny to find out......

But seriously..... 4 liters isn't even 5 US gallons!!  That amount of water is ridiculous for a goldfish.  Goldfish **must** be kept in large, heavily filtered tanks if you want to live properly.  Goldfish can reach sizes exceeding 8 inches depending upon variety and can easily live beyond 10 years.

Goldfish (no fish really) belong in bowls.  Bowls gained popularity in the mid to late 1800s when people were ignorant to the biological and scientific information we now obviously take for granted.

as long as you keep doing water changes and keep the fish healthy.  do not listen to catcatx or whatever, she is talking about a full grown gold fish, for example people tell me I cant keep my 3 gold fish in a 5 gal. aquarium but they lived for years and I still have 2 of them and they are very happy.  also i have a jack dempsey and a pleco in a 10 gal. aquarium and supposedley I need a 90 gal. aquarium for them but they have lived for years and are still happy!  also people say I need a 5 gal. for my betta but he lives in a cricket keeper the size of your bopw and swims every where!  that just proves my point!

yup can be done to let it live couple of years you just do a lot of water changes.   But it's not advisable.

you sure can, you should have no problem, gold fish are really hardy. Just don't over feed and remember to change the water.

get a 5gal glass tank (£8 tops), a heater a filter and a betta fish!

it well last longer than a goldfish kept in a bowl anyway

no. a 4L bowl is way too small. and just because someone else did it does not mean that fish was happy. people keep old dogs and other cute furries in horrific conditions, animals don't just lay down and die to prove a point.

if you want a happy healthy fish in a good environment and a clear concious give that "small" goldfish at least 70-80L. "small" goldfish should grow to a minimum of around 8" without fins for a fancy, and 14" without fins for a common/comet goldfish. they need strong filtration, at least double the volume of the tank, as they are extremely messy fish.

Edit: Servanah is proof of my first statement. They probably thought that kitten in jar spoof site was a good idea and think nothing of keeping a dog in a travel crate 24/7. Cruelty.
