Can i put a outboard motor on a home made boat?

can i put a 5hp motor on a home made boat or, if i get caught will i be in alot of trouble by the lake police people. the lake is in maine if that helps and the boat is made out of wood and about 15ft

  1. As long as it's not too much weight for the boat.Yes

    Some lakes have rules about motors...Usually allowing or not

    the use of gas engines.  But your rules there may differ.

    Check with local officials to be sure.


  2. Other than being safe... their are no laws or restrictions on motors on "homemade" boats.  (In fact, that is what I do - build home made boats.) In Maine, "all motorboats" (homemade or otherwise) of any size, including airmobiles and personal watercraft, must be registered in Maine to be used in that State.

    (Fee for ten horsepower or less is $20)

    Prior to registration, the you will need to pay and show proof of payment that your annual boat excise tax has been

    paid. (Your excise tax will be less than your registration)Maine residents must pay the tax to the town

    in which they reside.
