  1. Absolutely not. First off, is the gerbil still in there? The rat would kill the gerbil. Second of all, aquariums are not at all appropriate for rats. And rats are social and should be kept in same s*x pairs, not alone or with any other animals.

  2. If you are asking if you can put the rat in the cage with the gerbil, then no.  If you are asking if you can use the cage to home only rats, then yes.

  3. Tanks are not ideal for rats, and usually lead to respiratory infections (because the air circulation is bad in there, and unless you clean every other day, they have to breathe in the dirty air). Having a tank topper would be better, but it still is not the greatest cage.

What size is the tank. For rats, I would recommend nothing smaller than 15 gallons, with a 2 leveled topper. Could you measure the entire cage right now? Use this site after to determine how many rats can live in it. http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.sht...

Just adding that you should not have 1 rat, but at least 2. They are social, and living with other rats is equally as important as feeding them the right food, or keeping them in the proper cage :)

  4. The rat will eat the gerbil.
