  1. Sure, as long as the back of the a/c is on the outside where it can properly vent the exhausting hot air. Close your window as much as you can snug it against the a/c. You really want to remove the screen and with the remaining opening to the outside cut a flat board to fit in place in order to keep out the bugs. The proper way to do it is take 2 support brackets, purchased from any hardware store, and mount it on the outside wall to hold up the back of the a/c. This way, the a/c won't fall out the window and seriously hurt someone. Your standard a/c is designed to fit windows that slide from left to right or right to left. Just make sure the a/c is positioned flat on the bottom as designed and not on it's side. The cut board will fill the remaining open portion.

  2. It's called a casement unit.  Buy that type of AC.

  3. they make a/c units for that type of window

  4. I agree with bobe, but make sure you don't turn the A/C unit on its side to try and use the wings to close the hole. After you cut a piece of board to hold the top of the a/c, make sure you secure it with something like screws into the frame. you don't want anyone to steal you a/c or get into your house.

  5. I don't mean to disagree but there are units made for vertical installation. They are made for a reason. Horizontal units are designed to be installed that way. They may work for a while but the stress that they are not engineered to deal with will, eventually, make them fail.
