  1. I have found rocks outside that I thought would look nice in my tanks so I would put them in a 5 gallon bucket with salt water. Then I would add jungle fungus guard one tablet for 5 days. Take them out use a brush and scrub them off. Place them back in a bucket with salt and water and add one tablet of jungle parasite guard for five days. take them out scrub them off and rinse under fresh clean water. This has always worked for me and I haven't lost a fish yet.

  2. You pretty much can put any type you want so long as you cure them first.  Now, when you say cichlid, that doesn't say much of anything really.  South American, Central American, New World, or African?  Certain types of rocks will either harden or soften your water and could actually work to your advantage depending on the type of fish you have.

  3. There are rocks out there that will effect the Ph of your water. Other rocks have been introduced to pesticides or herbicides, so unless you can guarantee they are untouched you can't add those. You are better of sticking to store bought rocks but some other rocks would be fine too.
