  1. While you CAN put it anywhere, subwoofer placement is a more complicated topic.

Here is the issue: you actually get a LOT of the subwoofer sound by wall reflection.  This leads to the myth that you cannot tell where it is coming from, but you can.

Think of a Guitar string. Pluck it and you get a low note.  Push down mid way and pluck - the sound is higher.

A sub along a wall is like plucking a guitar string.  Putting the sub in a corner of the 2 longest un-broken walls helps enhance the lowest frequencies possible.  This is called "Corner Loading"

So a place in a corner, or 2/5 or 1/3 along the longest wall usually gives you smoother and deeper bass.

It CAN be behind you, but pay attention to the un-broken walls nearby.

  2. Your ears can not tell where the low frequency sounds are coming from. Anything below 60hz is supposed to be non-directional. Your room may determine the placement. The sub might sound better in different locations based on the room.

  3. Subwoofers can go anywhere.  In fact, that's why they were invented.  Scientific research showed that the ears can't tell where low bass sounds are coming from.  So by sending the bass signals to a separate speaker, they were able to make the speakers smaller and also have only one unit that played the low bass.  That made placement more convenient and also saved money.

  4. It really doesn't matter where you put the sub-woofer. but generally it is in the front because it generally re-acts with the front speakers and usually it is wired with them., and to keep the length of speaker wire to a minium, it is usually in front.
