I live with my aunt. My parents are currently living in China. My aunt is dumb and lazy and doesn't earn any income because she claims she's too weak to work. The thing is her sister is very well off and gives her money every month for bills and personal expenses. How do i go about getting financial aid?

  1. You should talk to financial aid counselors at the schools you are applying to. They will be able to guide you through the process and make it easier on yourself.

It all starts by filling out a FAFSA...you can do this online or on paper. Its a form that asks about family income, your income, etc to help the government determine how much aid you deserve. You'll also want to check out AES's website. They provide low-interest loans to full-time students that you don't have to pay back until you graduate. Combine these two and you shouldnt have to worry about the costs of school while your in school. You can sort it out later once your finished.

  2. You will have to fill out the fafsa at http://fafsa.ed.gov using your and your parents income.  You CAN NOT use your aunts info on the fafsa.  If your parents were out of the country and filed a US tax return, use that info on your fafsa.  If they did not file a US tax return, use the equivalent of the China version (paying taxes are universal, trust me).  You will have to convert the monetary amounts into us dollars before you enter them on your fafsa.

If you are confused, you can call 1800-4FEDAID for more details.

Repeat, you CAN NOT use your aunt unless she has legally adopted you.  Even her having legal guardianship won't exempt you from using your parents income.

PS: anyone can get fin aid regardless of parental income.

  3. Try looking here. It’s an excellent site with some wonderful options for you. You won't regret opening it. It will definitely help you. Have a look.
