Yea, both of you need to be registered in each others friend roster. You can host a game for VS or join up a friend who has an open room.

Yep - Simply register him, and start a Friends race. Then, when he does the same, you can start the race.

Step by step (try to do this while on the phone with each other. it helps.)

1: register each other.

2: Make sure you're both online

3: have one of you go to "friends" and open a room

4: the other should just select your mii and it will say "race!" or something like that once you've created a room

5: the host of the room hits begin!
