i have 120gb hard drive split in 2, with all my initial programs being automatically put in the 1st partition filling it up and slowing my comp down, any solutions with moving programs (without deleting them)or removing the partition will be gratefully employed, thank you

  1. in widows go to

    start>control panel>Administrative tools>computer management

then click on disk management on the left side

then right click on the partition you want to delete and hit delete

  2. Is the remaining partition formatted? In order to remove the current set of partitions I THINK that you would unavoidably have to format the entire drive and thusly lose all your data. You could try backing up onto other media and then trying this.

Another option though is to format the remaining partition and use it as a second hard drive. As most of the time it usually is, I'll assume your computer is using windows as its operating system. In 'my computer/computer' the unused partition should show up whether or not it's been formatted just like it were a second drive and to format it into NTFS which is the currently used file system for Windows xp and vista is simply a matter of right clicking and saying format and the rest will be prompted.

If you're worried about storage space affecting computer speed you could also create a 3rd small partition to use as 'swap' and the computer can use this memory like virtual memory for a small boost in speed.

  3. well a partition filling up won't slow your PC down but there are free partition management programs you can use to resize partition. Check www.cnet.com for some i use easeus partition manager.

  4. You have to have at least one partition. Most hard rives are configured for two, because the manufacturer keeps the OEM and associated backup utilities or restore programs on it.

If the computer slows down it is not because the partition is filling up, it takes the same amount of time to write data to the  hard drive regardless where it is physically placed.  give or take a few milliseconds)

Deleting a partition is NOT for the casual appliance operator

If you remove the partition, you will still have to re format the entire disk in order to use the space, thus wiping out all programs on it.
