Can i renew my independant car insurance for just two months rather than six months?

my insurance expires in oct but i'm planning to sell my car by nov. so i don't want to pay for my 6 month renewal in oct. is there a way out? thanks for all suggestions.

  1. Well, the duration of insurance policies is law, in each state - decided by each insurance commissioner.  MOST states don't allow a renewal period less than six months, some require a year.

    Even if the state allows a shorter period, most companies don't want to write for shorter periods, as it costs more to issue policies more frequently.

    Just go ahead and renew your policy, and when your car sells, you can cancel it.  If you don't replace the car, ie, you're turning in your plates, many states won't allow the insurance company to charge you any extra for the mid-term cancellation.  You'll have to check with your agent, though, for state specific information.


  2. No they won't allow you to, but if you get the month by month option you can cancel your insurance anytime that you like.  All policies are contracts for six months regardless of how you pay for it.  The suggestion above is going to be your best option.  Best of Luck.

  3. Unless your insurer accepts monthly payments, you need to pay and then get a refund.
