Can i replant a rosebush this time of year?

my neighbors are moving and they said if i wanted to dig up their rosebush and replant it my yard that i was more than welcome to it. i dont want to this if there is a chance that i will kill the plant. is this a bad time of the year to so. thank you all for your responses

I transplanted a rose three weeks ago.  First I trimmed the shrub down to the main stem, so that basically all I had was a big rooty k**b with no thorns.

I dug out as much of the root system as I could, digging two feet around the main root ball for all the roots.  I dug up the surrounding soil as well.

I placed that rootball in a five-gallon pot to see if the rose would revive...and by gawd, it did!

I will not transplant it this year.  I will take it inside so that it has time to hardy up; I'm afraid the winter would kill this rootball since the plant was traumatized by its transplant.

I also have to figure out where to plant it.  My husband hates roses and I dug up the shrub because the previous home owners planted the rose on the north side of the house, in shade, and the rose was growing at a 45 degree angle to reach for sun.

As long as you dig a wide hole around the rose plant without damaging the roots, then dig a hole about 1 1/2 times the size of the root ball in the place where you want it to grow, then add soil amendments such as bone meal and peat moss in addition to garden soil to the new hole and then plant the rose bush snugly in the hole, watering well and adding mulch at the base, you should be OK. Also, it is important that where the rosebush is planted gets at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight otherwise it will not bloom very well.  Good luck!

should not be a problem... pick a sunny spot to replant in..get as much of the root system as possible..trim it back a little...don't plant it any deeper than it was,,use a good planting mix..mix in a little bone meal...water well and enjoy.
