  1. Yes, you can. I'm the exact same size as you, and I started on a Ninja 250, then to a Yamaha R6, and now am on a CBR600RR.

Sport bikes will always feel more cramped to a tall guy, because your legs will be cramped more. Watch the bikes for the 'indentions' in the tank where your knees are supposed to go. Many times my knees end up past the indentions, where the tank juts back out (not comfortable). As it pertains to this problem, here's how the big 4 rank with their current models:

    1. kawasaki zx-6r (best)

    2. suzuki gsxr600

    3. honda 600rr

    4. yamaha r6 (worst)

Also, don't worry about the dealer at all. Just check out your local craigslist ads.

  2. All you need to do is sit on one to tell whether it fits you or not.  You want to be able to put both feet flat on the ground.  That won't be a problem for you.  But I think you might find smaller sportbikes a little cramped.  But remember, sport bikes are not really comfortable to begin with.  They're not -about- comfort.  The bigger sportbikes (1000 cc) will let you stretch out a little more.  Or you might try a 'sport touring' bike, which is a little less single-purpose.

If you're a beginner, I wouldn't recommend you buying a shiny new bike right off.  You're going to be hard on your first bike.  You're going to abuse the clutch. You might well drop it once or twice before you get the hang of it.  A brand new sport bike, you can do $1500-2000 worth of damage just tipping it over on the driveway.  Replacing all that 'tupperware'.

You should get a used bike first, maybe 5-10 years old.  Take the MSF course, very important.  After a year, you can probably sell the bike for about what you paid for it, and by then you'll have a better idea of what you want.

Modern sport bike are deadly serious single-purpose machines. They are marvels of engineering and I'm sure they're a blast to ride, but they are very twitchy and high-strung like a race horse.  They are not comfortable on long trips.  For your first bike you want something more 'general purpose'.  Some bikes -look- sporty but are really more general purpose--the Kawasaki Ninja, for instance, or Suzuki Bandit.  They're very fast, very good-handling, but they are comfortable enough to spend the day on.

    Good luck!

  3. jesus h christ mike, cant you put a little more detail into your answers ?   lol

  4. Yes, I'm 6' and I ride a fully buit Honda CRF50. LOL

For sportbikes, a 1000cc isn't much different than a 600cc when it comes to seat height, and sportbikes are pretty universal. People who are 5' 4"-6'7" can easily fit on one. It just changes the lean angle of your back, pressure on your wrists. Sportbikes typically have adjustable peg mount positions too.

Get a 600cc, dont be a squid and start on a 1000 "because it's a better deal". A 600 is arguably a better learning tool than a 1000, and a Ninja 250 is a better learning tool than a 600. The smaller the displacement the less trouble you can find yourself in, and with you being a student, insurance is going to be cheaper, as well as gas mileage. A 250 will get 60-70 MPG, a 600 varies, but is about 35-45.

The 2008 Ninja 250 has been redsigned for the first time since 1988. YES 1988. It looks like a 600 and it's $3,499 brand new. Most 600's are $9,000 + new.

But for a 600 decide if you want a SUPERSPORT or a SPORT/SPORT TOURER. Supersports are the cutting edge, totally focused on speed, expensive, and are uncomfortable for long rides.

A Sports/Sports tourer is a good alternative to a supersport. It's seating position is fully forward to almost fully upright (depending on what model) and it doesn't have the latest engine advancements, ECU's, Exhaust layouts but are still amazingly fast. These are more comfortable and cost less.

    Supersports= Yamaha R6, Honda CBR600RR, Kawasaki ZX6R, Triumph Daytona 675, Suzuki GSXR600.

    Sport/Sporttourers= Yamaha R6S, Yamaha YZF600R, Yamaha FZ6, Honda CBR600F4i, Kawasaki Ninja 650R, Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Kawasaki 500R, Triumph Speed Triple, Suzuki SV650S, Suzuki GSX650F, Suzuki GS500.

Wear a helmet and take a MSF safety course.
