Can i run a window unit air conditioner in the house not in a window

I was wondering if it would hurt anything to run a window unit air conditioner inside the house, not in a window. None of the windows in my bedroom will fit my unit. So i was wanting to just plug it in and set it in the room with a container under the unit to catch the condensation. Is this a possible idea? Sweating in Oklahoma, please let me know.

  1. yes it is possible i guess, ive seen such thing

  2. also, it is dangerous in the fact that air conditioners release some chemicals into the air so by you running it inside, you can harm yourself.

  3. Yes, but the hot air coming out of the back of the unit will defeat the purpose.

Try to get the unit up level with the window and open to let the hot air out.

  4. I see a lot of good answers but no one has adressed the intake air for the condenser. If the unit has vents on the sides it is going to exhaust a lot of your cool air through the rear coil also. This in turn will draw in a lot of hot moist air from somewhere, so I doubt it will cool very much of the house, probably only be cool directly in front of it. If by chance there aren't vents on the side it could work ok.IF IT WERE ME I WOULD USE THE DOOR.IF YOU HAVE ONE TO SPARE.IF YOU DON'T CRAWL IN A WINDOW. LOL

  5. Give it a shot, just make sure its not covered up and that you have something to catch the water. Stay Coll up there.

  6. If it is not hooked up to an outside source, you would just be circulating the hot air back into the room, so that would defeat the purpose.  Sorry, I wish it would work too!

  7. Wont do any good. The back end of the a/c will give off as much heat in the room as the front end gives off cool. A loosing battle.

  8. OK, here's a brainstorm, may work for you.  Take some waxed cardboard or insulation board and make rectangular duct that is shaped to direct the hot air out the window.  Use Duct tape on the corners and make sure that the a/c is set up so that the water drains out the window sill.  The A/C won't present any chemical hazard because you are just exchanging air.  Hope that this helps to keep you cool....

  9. Well if your sweating now , wait till you fire that puppy up without venting the hot air that comes out the back. You would probably heat the room up at least 20-30 degrees more than it was. It has to be vented outside . Find a unit that fits or trade yours for a proper size one for your windows. Or you can make a hole in the wall and mount it if it`s your house. Do not run it inside .

  10. There are new air conditioners that operate totally indoors. But window type AC needs to exhaust hot air from the condenser (rear of the unit) to the outside. Only compromise you can make is fabricate a rectangular funnel shaped flange at the rear of the AC and connect a flexible aluminum dryer pipe and somehow let the end of the pipe exhaust outside. Also keep an eye on the condensation tray so that it won't overflow.
