  1. buy that thing (i forgot what its called) that you connect to your water hose and into the water intake.

  2. Boat motors use water for cooling. You could destroy the engine beyond repair if you run it without water for cooling.

  3. Can you run it without water, Yes. Is it a good idea, No.

Running without water for just 20-30 seconds will not hurt the engine as far as heat is concerned, but it may ruin the water pump impellar.

If the engine has been sitting for a couple of years, you would want to replace the water pump impellar any way.

Never, never, never, run it any faster than idle with it out of the water and in gear. If it's in gear and out of the water and you give it throttle, the engine can and very likely will take off and run wide open and you won't be able to shut it down. That will ruin the engine for sure. Don't even do this if it's submerged in a barrel of water unless it's got a test wheel (prop) in place of the prop. Even then don't go very far with the throttle.

  4. Hang it inside a 55 gallon drum  about 1/2 full of water. Don't run it dry because You will burn the pump up..Make sure you secure the motor to the drum, and make sure the drum is setting solid......

  5. DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE WITHOUT WATER FOR EVEN  SECOND.  In addition to burning up the impeller, without water for cooling the engine will overheat and even within 1 minute you can have damage that is not repairable (with the exception of a powerhead rebuild.)  Also putting the motor in a 55 gallon drum is not the correct procedure for getting water into an outboard that is not in a lake or river.  You need to invest in a set of muffs, available at any boat dealer or marina, attach it to a garden hose and place the muffs over the water intakes on the lower unit.  Just remember to turn the water on before starting the motor.

  6. The other guys had good answersbut.. It isnt the pump that will get ruined. They were right about not starting it without water. without water the impeller in the fresh water pick up pump will be destroyed and have to be replaced. you should check the waterpump impeller once a year. and since your down there might as well change it. If you operate the engine dry it will overheat and destroy the rubber impeller

  7. alal

  8. sure for a minute or less.

  9. You can get a set of "muffs" that fit over the water intake and connects to a water hose to supply water to the engine. Without water you will ruin the pump in less then 20 seconds. They are available at any good marine supply store.

  10. Use water or you will burn up the pump. Use ear muffs they call them you hook a hose to them then it feeds through the intank on the bottom. Or you can use a 55 gallon drum. I like the earmuffs the best in my oppinion.
