I have a small tank with 4 guppies in in and today one of my guppies started swimming vertically. what is wrong with him? no, he's not already dead because he will swim horizontally and then its almost like he floats upwards vertically. He appears to be eating normally and he looks normal. Is this something that could be contagious to my other guppies?

  1. This could be caused by any number of things. If they are new  check to see if any have little white specs on them. If so then they have ick and a gooogle serch will tell you how to get rid of it. By the time fish are swimmin on thier side it is usually too late. Incase it is contagious I would remove the fish.

  2. I cant remember the exact term *chlorocitis maybe* but its a disease most common in female guppies. It cause disruption in their swim bladder with regulates their position in the tank. You should hospitalize it. Which means you should but it in a separate container with nothing else in it no decorations or anything. In order to transfer it immediately with no trauma fill this contain half way with water from your tank and then fill it the rest of the way with new water. Let it sit for about an hour before putting the guppy in it so it is a stable temperature. Now put ur guppy in it and add a little salt everyday the salt is the most non evasive cure to this disease. every 2 days do a partial water change while still adding a little salt everyday. You guppy should respond quickly and as she returns to her normal swimming behavior u can put her back in the tank with ur other guppies. There are medicines u can buy but the salt works just as good. If she has already developed a white spot(s) then its probably to late but try to save her. Good Luck!

  3. It depends really. This could be poor water quality, constipation, or it could be from an infection.

So check your water perameters, and don't feed him for a day. Check in on him every now and then to see what hes doing. If it is constipation it is VERY minor and should be no problem. But if it continues I would suggest medicated foods if it is still eating and do a water change every 2-3 days. You could use medications such as Maracyn 2, Maracyn TC, or any others really.

    Good Luck!
