  1. Yes you can. Just order your free credit report by downloading the request form from Transunion and/or Equifax. Each listing will show who the original creditor is (if current). If the account is in collections it will show something to the effect of 'account transferred' with the date the account was sent to xyz collection agency.

  2. You can get your credit reports for free by going to http://wwwannualcreditreports.com

You get all three credit reports.

By the way...TransUnion lost a class action lawsuit.  If you had a credit card, bank loan, or any other type of account that could be reported by the credit bureaus, you qualify to be a participant.  You can get 9 months of free credit monitoring, reports, and scores.  Just visit https://www.listclassaction.com for information and to register as a participant.

  3. You can go to www.annualcreditreport.com once a year and get free copies of your credit report from Experian, TransUnion and the other big one - can't think of the name...

ADD: This is different from freecreditreport.com in that you do not need to sign up for anything - no 30 day trial for credit monitoring or anything - no cc info is asked for (tho they try to sell you add ons) and you can save and print all three reports.  They will show who holds the debt now, and who owned it before...like Anjell says below...
