You may not see your birth certificate online - because the information about your birthdate and your birthplace are supposed to be private.  However, in some states you may order your birth certificate online.

In Southern California during the 1990's, Orange County (near Los Angeles) tried to put Kiosks in every Country Library to issue birth ceritificates to parents.  The newspaper reported how some people could circumvent the kiosk's safety protocols to get birth ceritificate "abstracts" (similar to copies) - and *boom*, all the kiosks were removed by 1996.

However, some states have vital records departments that have indices online that help you order your birth certificate.

Las Vegas, for instance, has a website that helps with birth and marriage certificates REQUESTS.  You have to upload a Photo ID and a credit card with your name in order to complete your application.

Interestingly enough - they have a dual system for Marriage Certificates in Las Vegas - one for people who know who they married, and one for people who aren't sure who they married.
