  1. Actually in a sense you do start college right away. Basic training and tech school right at the beginning are worth college credits. Then you do upgrade training to become more proficient in your job. That's some more. When you've finished that you can attend college classes part time in the evening. You can take up to 4 classes in a calendar year that the government will cover with tuition assistance. When you've completed the general education requirements and electives you'll have an Associates degree in your career field.

  2. Greco is correct when referring to the Community college of the Air Force.   . .

Most  civilian colleges will only give you PT credit for basic if they give you any credit at all.

When you finish your tech school and go to your first base, you will have OJT and CDC (Career Developement Courses).  I do not let my troops take civilian courses until they are finished with their CDCs.  Job proficiency is the main focus.  Most supervisors have that philosophy.

  3. you will not be permitted to take any college course while you are in training.  Once you arrive at your first duty station, you must get permission from your Chain of command.  you will not be permitted to attend full time while Active Duty.

  4. Not right away,

After basic, you will go to Tech School.

Then after you get to your first duty station,

You will have your CDC's , career development courses , a self study course with a closed book final exam and your 5 skill level training.

You will not be authorized to take college class's until after you finish your CDC's and at some bases, get your 5 skill level.

Figure on 6 months after you get to your first duty station.

Of course, thats with the AF paying for the class's.

If you want to pay 100 percent of the cost yourself, you can start taking class's right after you get to your first duty station.

  5. once you get done with basic training and technical school you can take some classes. i just signed up for 2 distance learning(online) courses which cost $1,500 all paid for courtesy of the USAF!!  i recommend you take some kind of college while on active duty, and then you can either A. use your GI Bill after your enlistment, or B. serve 6 years and give half your GI Bill to a dependent or serve i think 10 or 12 years and transfer ALL of your GI Bill to  a dependent
