I have an outstanding debt to national grid and i am moving into a new house and am going to need electric obviously.

Im almost positive the debt has been sold to another company because i am receiving phone calls from debt collectors.

Will they still allow me to get electric? and also do electrical bills affect my credit history and if so for how long. I havent paid off the debt at all yet, im only 22 and a college student and dont necessarily have the money to do so

  1. UK? There is no reason why they would not provide you with electricity. Even if you have debts the company may still quite like to have you as a customer. As for the debt, you may be able to spread it out and add it to the payments if the company are still in control of it. If not, you need to contact the debt company to find out what is going on and why they keep phoning you. It may have nothing to do with NG. Be careful how you ask the questions though. Don't own up to it, in case its not your debt. As a utility is classed as a priority debt, it must be priority paid over any credit debts you may have. (credit cards, catalogues, store cards etc.) Can I suggest that you do an income and expenditure sheet to show what your incomings and outgoings are. You really need to consider making some kind of offer of payment. This is not going to go away, so its best to deal with it now.
