I am a permanent resident of the united states, i have a green card for about 7 years.

however, on march 27th i am going to take the citizenship test.

on april 24th the next month, i want to travel from new york to utah, and i am wondering if i wont be allowed to because i will be waiting for my citizenship test results..

i heard that when i go take the test, they take my green card and passport (from my other country not american passport obviously) and keep it. is this true? if they do, i will be left with no documents to show that identify me and i wont be able to travel!

please anyone with knowledge on this subject help let me know..

thank you! and dont worry i choose best answer.

  1. I don't know about the other stuff...

But, instead of a driver's license, you could get a state I.D. It looks exactly like a driver's license, but it does not license you to drive :)

  2. Hi, I took my US citizenship test on Jan 10 and got my citizenship certification on Feb 7 this year.  When I tool the test, US CIS only checked my greencard for proofing my ID, they did not take my greencard and passport.  However when I attended the oath of ceremony, they took my greencard.

For US residence (greencard holder or US citizen) travel within US, only need to show her/his ID, such as State Photo ID card or Driving Liecense, so I think there is no problem for you to travel from NYC to Utah.

State Photo ID card is a ID card for proofing your indentification.

    Good luck in your test!

  3. If you drive, your driver's license will be fine for travel, and if you don't drive, you can get a photo ID from the DMV of your state.  But you also don't have to give up your home-country passport at any time.  Since some time in the 1960's, the USA has accepted dual citizenship.  You can give up your other nationality or not.  It's your own free choice and it's not required.

  4. once you gain citizenship you will be given a paper stating such - you will have to relinquish your green card ans they will annul your foreign passport - however you will have the proper documentation to get a US passport and local ID/Driver license

that being said go get a drivers license as well , you dont need any papers to travel in the US across states - you will need an ID if you travel by plane ot train, and of course a  drivers license if you plan to drive. You will only need your passport if you plan to travel out of the country.
