I am a very mature student and i want to study english, maths and science GCSE's for a year and then pass the exam at the end.

I wanted to know if it was possible and where should i go for it?

Should i study at home or college?

And do they accept mature students?

Thanks to all.

  1. hi

  2. if it is possible i would definitely recommend it if you are a disciplined student. I took my gsce's about a year ago and I feel I learned the most from studying on my own anyway . You could take a study skills course or just read about good techniques for learning to help you out. The best way i learned was remaking colorful notes for myself in a way that tested what i knew and didnt know. Then I knew what i needed to study more..

Look up scientific videos to explain concepts you don't understand..but over all, the GCSE exams are pretty much memory tests..they're all fact-based rather than understanding. so this makes it fairly easy to study on your own as theoretically, you could take the exam with the memorized facts but have no idea about how it actually works..

  3. College's do accept Mature Students - I was in my late 20's when I went back to do GCSE Sociology and Geography (in one of the classes the youngest was 19 and the oldest 50).

I you can afford it go to college - my local college charges about £120 for each subject.  Otherwise buy a textbook and revision guide and study at home, and then to do the exams you will need to contact the Exams Office of your local college in January, and ask them if they accept External Candidates, if they do they will order an exam paper for you and charge you a small fee to cover the cost of the paper, room and invigilitator.

If you decide to study from home through a distance college, do NOT use ICS as they are con-merchants - I started a GCSE with them 8 YEARS ago and I am STILL waiting for them to answer a question, until I get an answer I can NOT do the exam.

  4. K - any chance you could elaborate on that ICS statement? Im studying with them, at the moment, and although i dont think theyre great, i dont think thaty are that bad. Could you please email or something so i can hear your story? I really need to be passing my exams next june!

    thanks x

  5. If you wanted to study from home, you should look at either the national extension college, or ICS.

    http://www.nec.ac.uk

    Or http://www.icslearn.co.uk

Both provide you with the material to study with, and you have contact with a tutor and help online, and then you can study at your own pace. You can either find somewhere yourself to do your exams, or NEC has a centre in Cambridge. I think ICS requires you to find your own exam centre.

They're both relatively inexpensive for GCSEs.
