It's the summer of my quickly approaching senior year of high school and of course where I want to go to college is one of my main priorities at the moment. The thing is I've been interested in going to a college/university in Italy, but I can't read or speak Italian, so it's been quite difficult for me to even find a starting place. I'm not even sure of which schools I want to consider because of my lack of reading and speaking Italian. Of course I'm going to have to eventually learn the language, but is it possible to even be able to go to school in another country without knowing the language? I guess what I'm trying to find out is all the basic information that I need to know before I even consider going to another country for school. Thank You in advance!

  1. in HS I went to portugal for a year and didn't know the language, it took a few weeks, but Ipicked it up..

HS is easier than college, so I don't know, but I think if you were to just take even a 1st semester and learn the basics of conjugating verbs and sentence structure you would do fine...

the best way to learn is to immurse yourself in the culture.    but definitly get the basics under your belt it will help immensly..

    Good luck....

and I suggest too.  sign up now at your local community college and start taking italian, your teacher there will have lots of info and advice on studying abroad and can recommend colleges or univeristies there too..

have fun... it is an awsome experience!! keep it fun and don't stress about it!  It will open lots of doors for you in the future.. and looks great on resumees!

(I have studied in Russia and mexico too)

  2. Some american colleges have a study abroad program. I suggest you try that. I know Messiah College in PA has one. I am sure there are plenty of others. One of the requirements of study will most likely be that you take and pass courses for the language of the country you are studying in if its not a prerequisite. Messiah colleges program is pretty in demand, I know because I learned about this during my tour of their school. Good luck.
