If you are carrying the school sized backpacks those are fine. I took one on a plane once. Carry on.

What kind of backpack? It depends on the size.  The ones with the metal frames are probably too big to take on with you. Small daypacks are fine.  Check on your airline's website, they list specific dimensions for carry-ons.
