  1. Take Amtrak's daily "Crescent" from Atlanta to New York City, and, the following morning, take the "Maple Leaf" to Toronto. You are forced to sleep in New York City.

Other option: Take the same "Crescent", but take the "Montrealer" from New York to Montreal, then a VIA Rail train from Montreal to Toronto. In that case you need to sleep a night in New York and another night in Montreal.

  2. Yes. You will take AMTRACK to the border then switch to CN RAIL which will take you directly to Toronto.

  3. no.

you would have to take one train to a state and board another train.

then you would take the second train to Toronto.

  4. yes, you can take train from atlanta to toronto.

best itinerary is atlanta-new york city on The Crescent, and new york city-toronto on The Maple Leaf.  train dp atl in evening, ar nyc next afternoon, then stay overnite at place of your choosing in nyc, then train dp nyc in am, ar trto that night.

you didnt say if you were going one=way or round=trip.  if returning, train leaves trto every morning, ar nyc every night, stay overnite in nyc, then dp next afternoon from nyc, overnight on train and ar atl next morning.

customs is done enroute on board the train at niagara falls.  technically, the operation of the train is passed from amtrak to via rail at nfs, but this is behind the scenes, the passengers stay on board the same train cars/loco all the way through to toronto.

an alternative route, via montreal, also exists.  this uses The Crescent atl-nyc, The Adirondack nyc-mtrl, and then via rail canada has 5-6 trains a day between montreal and toronto, about 6 hr train ride.  the schedules would require overnighting at nyc and at mtrl.

for fun, you can do a "Circle Trip", say, atl-nyc-trto-mtrl-nyc-atl, or vice versa.  you can add side trips to ottawa on via rail.

Amtrak and VIA jointly sell a North America Rail Pass, that allows unlimited stopovers.  there are several variations and prices.

call amtrak at 1.800.usa.rail, via rail at 1.888.via.rail.

you can check websites www.amtrak.com or www.viarail.ca.

(as note, in previous poster's remarks, the Montrealer that used to run overnight thru vermont to montreal no longer runs, it is the daylight "Vermonter" to St Albans VT now, and you can then use a bus to get from St Albans to montreal).
