You can take a bag (like a small rolling suitcase) and one personal item which could be a purse, briefcase, laptop or pillow. If this is a problem, get a small travel pillow and stuff it in one of your carry-on bags. Even if you carry a small one separately with two other items, the gate staff won't likely call you on it.

Sure you can, as long as the pillow is within the size restrictions for carry-on baggage. Many places sell smaller  travel size pillows that easily squeeze into your carry-on luggage or are small enough to qualify for your 2nd personal item.
