Can i throw away my old receiver/stereo/speakers in the regular trash?

Ebay, Craigslist,goodwill, or freecycle.

If none of these, than take them to a hazardous waste disposal site.

If I were in your town, I'd take them. Even if they're broken, speakers have fun magnets and usually some copper wire in them.   :)

Please don't.  These things contain a lot of heavy metals that can contaminate ground water.  

Your local landfill probably has a collection site where you can drop it off.  It will be sent off to recover what useful material that they can.

Even better, do they still work?  If so, someone may want to have them.  Post it on your local FreeCycle group
