  1. No.

  2. Yes, you can train for a Private Pilot's certificate in an LSA aircraft that is properly equipped.  It must be certified for night (by the manufacturer) flight for that training or equipped (but not necessarily certified) for IFR for that portion.  And it must have a radio and transponder with mode c for the ATC training.  If your LSA isn't equipped for the training above, you can simply rent a type certified plane for that phase.  Also, make sure your instructor (CFI) and examiner (DPE) will accept the use of an LSA.   They do have the option to require a type certified airplane.

Make sure you read the "Ask the Expert" section on sportpilot.org.  It will answer most of your questions.  Or ask a question there if you need additional info.

I will also add that a Sport Pilot's certificate takes 20 hours, not 30 hours as stated above.  30 hours are required for a Recreational certificate.

Good Luck.  If it were an option when I started flight training (and an LSA was available); I would have trained for a Sport Pilot's certificate first.  But not an option as I soloed (and earned my private certificate) over 25 years ago.

  3. nope.. just rent a cessna :)

    then buy a cirus SR22

  4. No I don't think so. LSA can only fly 120kts or less. The answer is no but I'm not sure why

  5. The correct answer is YES, if it is an E-LSA or S-LSA aircraft.  The rule in Part 61 covers this.  I would suggest you contact you local Flight Standard District Office (FSDO) and ask to speak with an operations inspector for the complete answer.

This is covered in the operational limitations phase two the aircraft is issued during certification.

Remember light sport is only 30-hours and private is 40-hours.
