  1. via usb is acceptable but to speed things along i suggest installing a firewire card. cheap and easy to do,  


  2. Yes, You don't need firewire' USB works fine for me & has done for many years, firewire may transfer faster but the editing programme determines the amount of time it will take you to manipulate the video files when they have been transferred.
