Question:

Can i transfer to another college as a freshman?

I applied to a public university in VA (William and Mary) early decision in 2007 and was accepted. After attending for one semester, and not receiving any financial aid and not having someone to cosign a loan (because i am a legal alien and not a resident) I had to drop out at the end of the fall semester.

i'm considering going back, but the situation is still similar and my green card has yet to arrive. William and Mary has been very unhelpful and even prevented me from communicating with my financial aid counselor for a while. Even though I applied for FAFSA and qualified for aid, they are not willing to give me any aid until I have the actual green card (that i applied for in august 07).

My question is, can i apply to a private college and start all over again? When i was in high school many top 30 colleges contacted me, but i thought (not being too informed about the process and having a very particular situation) attending a public university would be cheaper, since i pay taxes, have a social security, alien registration number and i've been living in the U.S for 6 years. I'd be willing to apply all over again, but can it still be done?

  1. Since you completed the term, you will have to apply to other colleges as a transfer unfortunately. This bites because most of the merit scholarships are only for new freshmen.

No school can give you the Federal money doled out on the basis of FAFSA until you actually have the Green Card. So you would need to apply to colleges that give good aid to internationals and there aren't many. Those that do are very top colleges in general such as many of the ivies. Middlebury is also need blind to internationals. If you can get into one of those you'll be in good shape.

Check out the international forum on College Confidential.com, there are many students there who can give you detailed info on colleges generous to them.

I am Willson Roland by name, i live in U.K. just a few month ago i

was in search for a loan of € 70,000 as my family was running out of money for feeding and my education. i was scammed about € 430  and i decided not to involve my self in such business, finally colleague of my introduced me to a loan firm due to my appearance and doings. I made a trial and i am most grateful am i today, i was given a loan amount of € 45,000  by this great firm Harvey's Loan Inc. managed by Mr,Patrick Harvey.

  3. First off, whatever you do in ANY college, EVER, will follow you throughout your life no matter where you apply in the U.S.

You will just have to apply over again, but what school do you want to go to?  Back to William and Mary?  If so, call the admissions office, tell them your situation and ask what to do!

  4. My understanding of the rules regarding financial aid is that you must be either a US Citizen or a permanent resident (green card holder) to qualify for aid. If you have not received your green card or at least the letter stating that you have been approved it is very unlikely that any school will give you aid until you can prove you are a permanent resident.

Unless the rules have changed since I attended university any contact, any offer, and any acceptance is valid for the school year in which you plan to attend. Since the school year is over with it is my strong feeling that any contact or offer extended to you would be no longer valid. I therefore believe you cannot attend or start over until you have your green-card.

  5. why would you ignore those credits that would be a waste and if you were to transfer without those credits it wouldnt be considered a transfer just a freshman admittance

  6. sure u can start all over again. thing is, if u want even one of ur credits to be transferred at that new place,  then ur entire transcript will be sent, includin all that information bout ur legal status
