Sometimes it depends. Normally none of the domestic air flights will ask for your passport but sometimes due to the security check due to terrorism or findings of any culprits they may ask you to carry it. you need a passport only when you are landing in a diff country - if ur passing over a diff country but land in the same country, you dont need a passport.  and i presume when you say 'travel through air' you mean 'flying'
