Can i turn my HRV ventalation system into a AC system?

  1. Maybe, but it would not be most efficient to just add an air conditioner to it. You would want to take return air from the house into the supply to the new A/C to help with dehumidification. Also, the ductwork of an HVR might not be insulated, wasting some of the energy of your A/C system.


  2. From what I read: the fan in the HRV system is too small to us in an AC system.  The ducts may be big enough, perhaps not.  6" or 150mm into each room is min. duct size for AC and 8" or 200mm dia duct from fan unit.  AC requires fan (110v) & coil box with water drain to outside(inside the attic) and compressor outside with about 30 to 60 amp, 220V dedicated circuit.    

  3. All heating only systems can be converted and transitioned with cooling as long as there is ductwork,a plenum,and a blower.An indoor coil with pan,a drain, and a condenser with connecting copper is all that is required.
