  1.  I drive a Vauxhall Astra and have 3 children, we checked with the police (as we cannot fit 3 child seats across the back seats) and it is NOT illegal to place children in the front seat of a vehicle provided the correct child restraint is used, and if it is a rear facing child seat the air bag is deactivated, the police recommended the seat be adjusted to be furthest away from the dash board.

I also have the problem that i cannot deactivate the passanger air bag ( i think this is with all older models of vauxhall) i took the car into my local vauxhall dealership and they cannot disable to airbag unless your model comes with a key (which obvioulsy if it did you could do it yourself)

  2. Your child can legally go in the front seat of a car in a rear facing car seat as long as the passenger airbag is turned off, it is not illegal or unsafe as long as the airbag is turned off!

  3. you can switch off airbag, some new models of car have a simple switch to deactivate for this purpose on the passenger side. The seat should be pushed as far back as possible before fixing car seat. Some of the comments on here are political correctness gone mad, only a few years ago parents were transporting babies in baskets in the boot of cars. it is difficult to strap a baby seat in the rear of a three door corsa for example, hence why new cars have the provision to deactivate air bags which in many cases are an unpredictable danger on their own.
