  1. yes you can. You could have used on the first day of your persiod.  I was a little afraid to use one at first, but my sister was there with me and she talked me through it.  It doesn't hurt when you put it in when you have your period, especially when the flow is heavy.  if oyu try to put it in when you don't have your period, it might hurt a little just b/c you will be dry inside, there's no lubrication to let it slide in easily.

  2. Basically if you're ready & willing to put one in, then you're ready for it. I would recommend not putting one in while you're not on your period just because the blood helps lube it so it doesn't hurt, and along these lines I also recommend a plastic applicator as they slide in easiest. It may hurt the first time or two just because you're not used to doing it and don't know the right angle yet (which you learn by doing), but once it's in correctly you won't feel it at all. Just remember to change it every 8 hours-ish, or more if you have a heavy flow, to avoid TSS from bacteria. Good luck!

  3. It can be a bit daunting. You shouldn't put a tampon in if you're not on your period for several reasons, but the one that will matter to you the most is that it hurst like crazy going in and coming out. There's nothing there for it to absorb if you're not bleeding, and things are tight in there. So, yeah. Besides health concerns, dry cotton + dry v****a = nononono/owowowow.

Honestly, I'd say try out a few different kinds. You can go to websites and get samples sent to you, or ask friends who use tampons if you can have one to try (or filch them from family members). Make sure you have the right absorbancy (read the box, and I linked a site that has a reference for what qualifies as light/regular/heavy in terms of what's showing up on your pad), and just relax when you try them. I know it's hard. If you have to take it out and try again, try to leave it in for a few minutes so it won't be as dry coming out, and wait about half an hour before you try again (so there's something to lubricate the process).

You might get it right after a few tries, or you might have to try a few brands or techniques- or you might find they're not for you. It took me nearly a year's worth of periods to get the right combination, so don't stress about it.

(As for the link, read it if you like, but mainly you can just skip down to where it talks about the  Mansfield-Voda-Jorgensen scale)

  4. you can use tampons whenever you like . some girls use tampons from their first period . Just make sure their is some time in the day that you dont wear tampons . Like in the night . No you shouldn't use a tampon when you aren't on your period because it wont slide in easily and could hurt . Just use a super light tampon . they should be small enough for anyone .
