we purchased a wolf cooktop (with grill option) and now find that an adequate hood (900 + cfm) will cost as much or more. i recently stumbled onto an attic fan at lowes rhat pulled 1100+ cfm and wondered if it could be ducted such that it might replace the hood manufacturer's roof mounted blower. it would be used, of course, with a reasonably priced hood, that would otherwise be inadequate.

  1. if u didit right with sealed metal and an hvac metal guy making it and installing it then u will spend the same monies...plus if u create a problem with the draw of the smoke and such u could cause damage to the fan.....i've got a 1200 cfm 5 speed and it only cost me $900.00 ....go with the correct fan....

  2. The attic fan was not intended/designed to pull smoke and scent. Remember a hood fan is encased for protection against smoke sticky grease fumes and such.. just my 2 cents...

  3. I suppose you woul dhave to account for the grease/smoke condition. The filters that usually come with a "normal" hood should be considered.

Be careful, however, not to reduce the flow that goes across the fan by restricting the duct size.

Doing so will stall the fan and also cause the motor to work much harder. Frankly the motors are marginal and if you stall the fan you run the risk of burning out the motor. All in all I think your project has merit.
