I think people would use little wooden handles to wrap the wire around so that it wouldn't cut their hands when they did the deed.

You can also use piano wire or even monofilament, though I doubt it'd be as effective as a piano / guitar wire.

yeah you can. i'd love to watch the person's face when you garrote them. they're tongue will hang out, their eyes will bulge and they'll make some cool choking noises :P
