Can i use any type of oil on a stone to sharpen a pocket knife?

can i use olive oil or vegetable oil?

  1. a light weight oil is preferable.  just remember ~ once you use oil on that stone, you cannot change to water.

    i recommend one stone for water and one with oil.

    the texture/grit of the stone is a factor also.


  2. vegetable oils will turn gummy or rancid.  Better to use a petroleum distillate such as mineral oil, kerosene, lightweight machine oil, etc.

  3. YEP,YOU CAN USE THAT,BUT 3IN1 OIL WORKS GOOD,SPIT WORKS GOOD TO,MY DAD HAD A FREIND THAT COULD PUT ONE HECK OF AN EDGE ON A KNIFE,AND ALL HE USED WAS SPIT.DIDN'T RUST EITHER.

  4. I've used refrigeration oil for years on a sharpening stone.Mineral,alklabenzine,and poe.

  5. most oils used is minerial oil, but any light wt oil will do,
