if your travelling between ireland and england all you need is photo id, your birth cert is no good for travelling

It depends what for, but a lot of places (clubs and the like) only accept photo ID.

No. I can get just about anybody's birth cert. - I'm a geneological researcher- You need a passport with your picture on if you're flying or a driving licence with picture will do if going by boat

Your birth-cert is not a form of ID. It may state (prove?) that Joe Citizen was born in a certain place to particular parents on a given date, but how would any one know that this information refers to you?

Get yourself a passport. it cuts out all the hassle.
