my car is a 98 grand cherokee. i have just recently upgraded the 4 in-door speakers, and i plan on putting 2 12inch alpine SWE-1242 subs in the trunk.

can i use my factory head unit to do this, or will i need an upgrade?

  1. no use your mom....

  2. Aftermarket stereos have RCA outputs to send the audio signal to the amp. RCAs are the best method but chances are your factory stereo does not have a RCA output. You will need a amp with "high level inputs" or you will need to purchase a line out converter. If you have a amp with "high level inputs" you can tap in to the speaker wires and connect them directly to the amp to send the audio signal. If your amp does not have "high level inputs" you will need to purchase and install a line-out converter. Line out converters connect to your speaker wires and convert them to RCA so you can run RCAs to the amp. The "active" type line out converters that require 12volt power work better than the "passive" un powered type.

Being that you have a nice sub and amp I recommend you just but a aftermarket stereo. The other methods will work but replacing the deck is the best way to go and will result in higher sound quality.

  3. You dont have to upgrade but it is definitely recommended.
