  1. there is little or no paint on the market that's extremely toxic anymore

a tip for making paint dry and stop smelling faster is to "bake" it off, this is used almost all the time in commercial buildings, to dry paint, carpet glue, adhesives etc.

Close the windows and crank the heat up (not fun in the summer) or use a space heater so its just that room. Get it as hot as possible and leave it hot for several hours. This speeds the drying process, most paint, glue, lacquer really takes about a week or two to cure and the smell is it off-gassing. The heat will dry it out faster, and the smells go away quickly.

In most skyscraper/ big commercial buildings they let it bake on high heat for 12-24 hours and then air it out for a day or two after, before people can occupy it.

  2. You have 4 types of wall paint

    1) Matt Emulsion - Matt in finish and tends to get dirty easily

    2) Soft Sheen Emulsion - Washable (tends to called kitchen paint) and has a slight shine to it

    3) Silk Emulsion - Like soft sheen but very shiny

    4) Acrylic Eggshell - Water based, similar to soft sheen but has a tough finish (used in old folks and schools)

Then you get variations on the market (usually aimed at the DIYer) like washable Matt Emulsion.

  3. ordinary matt emulsion will cover it, you may need 2 coats, you can paint over the wallpaper. keep it well ventilated till it dry's.

  4. whenever I decorate, to remove odours I chop up an onion and leave it in the room over night.  The onion absorbs the paint odour.  Hopefully this might help.

  5. Any paint smells for a while.  If you used a latex-based paint, it shouldn't be dangerous.  Unpleasant maybe, but not dangerous.  If possible, air the room out for a while.

  6. put a couple of drops of vanilla in your paint. This will aid in removing the smell. Well cover it up at least.

  7. Hi ,Crown make a low odour emulsion paint which should help your son and ease his breathing Keep the room well ventilated long after the paint has dried.water based gloss, and satin paint is also useful for wood work well worth the additional cost good luck I hope your son's asthma improves

  8. Do not paint over the top.  The current paint needs air to fully dry.  There would normally be no danger with water based paints, but talk to your doctor if your son is badly asmatic (or phone NHS direct).

You can assist the curing either by waming the room and then later airing it or just by airing it for hours on end, open the windows, get a breeze thorugh.

  9. I doubt if there is any danger from the paint as nearly all new paints are safe to use anywhere.

I am not sure why you decided to use kitchen paint as a water-based emulsion would have been more suitable.

put the heating on to aid drying out but leave the windows open if the weather allows
