technically yes, you can use your desktop as you server, its called internet sharing,

the easiest way is to have a router then you can connect both of your computers to the router

to do this you need two network cards either on your desktop or laptop.

this can be in this way:

1 laptop with wifi and lan port and desktop with lan port

or

2 laptop with two lan ports and desktop with one lan port

or

3 laptop with lan or/and wifi and desktop with lan and wifi port

or

4 laptop with lan or/and wifi and desktop with two lan ports

basically you need two network ports at the computer which is connected to dsl

if your dsl modem is wifi you can connect to it with wifi and between desktop and laptop with cross cable on lan ports.

or you can connect to dsl through lan cable on desktop on one lan port and connect to laptop throgh other lan port or wifi port

after you decide how to connect the two machines,the one which connects to dsl identify it as A and other as B

give the network adapter the address on machine A through which it connects to machine B

192.168.0.1

255.255.255.0

and on the machine B in the network adapter get IP address automatically.

and on machine A right click your dsl connection and share it

and you are done

you can also share files and printer

TO both get on the internet at the same time?  If you have a router, yes you can.  If you only have the DSL modem, then no, you can't

get a wireless router then connect it to your dsl modem. that way u could have more than 1 computer connected to the internet :)
