  1. yes you can no problems there

  2. Matthew: nice work.

you have diferrent cone areas of the cone, so if you use closed box, you kill the bigger, better cone side.

  3. ya but the sound is gonna be muffled a lil bit

  4. Yes, generally that is fine. Low frequencies are non-directional.

  5. The other answer is borderline silly. You can use a subwoofer upside down, not because "low frequencies are non-directional", but instead because a speaker produces sound from either side of the speaker cone.... when the cone is moving out (from the front) then the cone is moving in (from the bottom) and vice versa. These two sound signals are 180 degrees out of phase which is why a speaker sitting on your table has very poor bass response ... the two signals cancel each other out.

"Low frequencies are non-directional" simply means that the wavelength of the frequency is of the order of the distance between your ears so your brain is unable to figure out the origin of the sound using the "hearing in stereo" trick.

To answer your question directly ... subs can be operated with either side facing out ... however ... they are not designed to operate magnet side out. By this I mean ... you will be hearing distortion from the sound traveling between the basket suuports. You will also hear distortion from the sound produced by the spider. You will also hear noise emitting from the motor vent in the middle of the magnet. A sub is a machine and it would be like putting the hood of your car under the engine instead of over it. The degree to which you hear these distortions is specific to the sub and also dependent on the volume you are operating at. The noise from the motor vent can be pretty loud and annoying.

=> Physically possible but not your best solution SQ-wise.

  6. if you are talking about having a downward firing sub then it will be fine. if you are reversing the speaker in the box, then you will have a few problems, the pair might cancel each other out.
