  1. I'm an electronics geek

    trust me on this one

Cell phones mess with the airplane electronics.

    NOT a good idea.

  2. It's true, you cannot use your phone while the plane is in the air, and most airlines extend that to no phones from the time they close the door before takeoff until the plane's taxiing after landing.

Although many people claim that it's because of possible interference with the plane's instruments, the real reason is because of interference on the ground. Mobile phones are designed with the assumption that your phone can only "see" a few nearby towers, but when you're in the air it can see dozens or hundreds, potentially tying up a channel on each one.

A few airlines are planning to test onboard mobile service, in effect a tiny tower on the plane. This is very unpopular with passengers, most of whom enjoy one of the few phone-free areas left. So be sure and text all your friends before you board to assure them that if you don't answer, it's not because you're dead, you're just on a plane.

  3. For real. You have to turn off your phone during taxiing and for the duration of your flight - you wouldn't be able to get much of a signal at 30,000 feet anyway.

  4. Your phone can be used before and after take-off only. Unless you are flying British Airways in Europe from London to somewhere far they are trying out an experimental service for phones being used during flight.

  5. you can use it until they are preparing for takeoff. then they tell you to shut off your phone for the duration of the flight.

    i think you'll survive w/out a phone.
