Can i use my tax id instead of my social security number to get paid?

I am doing summer research... and to get my stipend...i need to put down my social security number... can i put my tax id number instead?

  1. If you are being paid as an employee, you MUST use your SSN.  If you are being paid as an independent contractor, you may (and should) use your EIN if you have one.


  2. If you are paid as an employee you must use a SS number because you are required to have one to hold a job.  If you are an independent contractor you may use your tax ID number or your SS number.  I would advise using the tax ID number if you have one.  The fewer people that have your SS number the better.
