Can i use my wife's charity gift on my tax return ,is this one of those interchangeable thingies?

  1. If you file separate returns, and the contribution was from her account not a joint one, no you can't claim it.


  2. If you file jointly, you can.  

    Or, if you are filing separately, the check to charity was made from a joint checking account, AND your wife does not plan to claim the gift on her taxes (she isn't itemizing, for example), then you can.  


  3. Only if you file as Married Filing Jointly.

  4. On a joint return, yes. On a separate return for you only, probably 1/2 if community property funds were used to pay the contribution. If it was paid with her separate funds and you file separate returns, then no.

    Ask an accountant.

  5. You can file joint return.

    Also charity deduction is available as itemized deduction. You will itemize only when your itemized deductions are more than standard deduction.
