  1. The best bedding for hamsters is Carefresh and aspen shavings. Besides commercial bedding, toilet paper is a good and cheap alternative for hamster bedding. Always use only unbleached, untreated and non fragrant toilet paper. Rip it up and mix it with some aspen shavings for the bedding. Do not throw the empty toilet roll tubes. Give them to your hammies who like them as toys for gnawing and tunneling.

Do not use newspaper. Hamsters have a habit of gnawing at their bedding and if they ingest the newspaper, it is not good for their health and the ink in the paper can be toxic to them. Similarly do not use tissues with bleach, color or fragrance in them since the chemicals are injurious to the little hamster's stomach.

  2. yes i do it all the time with my rabbit and gerbil, though i would put a little bit a sawdust down too.

    hope this helps

  3. No recent studys found that newspaper can be toxic to rodents. And you do need bedding.

  4. My stepsister used newspaper in the cage of a rabbit that I gave to her and it ended up dying.  The rabbit was chewing on the newspaper so I don't know if it got ink poisoning or if there was really something wrong with it.  Best bet is to call up a vet and ask them if it's safe.  You could also probably get some info on a website about hamsters.

  5. They will chew up the newspaper.  Use bedding.  Newspaper is not good for them.

  6. my sister has always kept hamsters, she finds a bit of newspaer, but not to much because it is too hard and kitchen roll is good and easy to clean out! Saw dust is also good at soaking up!!

  7. Newspaper is not good for soaking up odor.  Shredded newspaper or paper towels and even cotton bedding-they love to use as an added feature to their bedding to hide in.  Corn Cob bedding sold at Walmart...is cheaper than the other bedding and more effective.  Saw dust, cedar, anything in that line is dangerous for a caged animal because it causes respiratory problems and early death.  They love wheels...so get them one they have the ones that that are plastic and their feet can't get stuck and they don't make that squeaking noise.  If you use an aquarium, the lid on top, put something small heavy on it..or they can get on top of the wheel and escape...LOL  I know.  I had one do that and get past 5 cats and woke me up crawling up my leg, and my male cat was at the bottom of my bed waiting for it...she had a swollen mouth and I was racing to get clothes on and run her to a vet...she spit out a mouthfull of cat food and was fine...LOL  I found out later, that hamsters will hold their food in their cheeks until they can spit it in a safe place...

  8. you can use newspaper and paper towls and other soft stuff

    hope i could help you!

  9. I have rats ad I dont like using newspaper because the print tends to rub off onto their fur and they nibble the paper and I'm not sure that it's that good for them. I use thin base of aspen shavings and then shredded unprinted newsprint. You can often purchase rolls of it from your local newspaper, you can also buy in bulk newsprint from stationary wholesalers, even though this is expensive in the first instance it will last you ages. I rip it up because then it has soft edges, if you cut the paper it gets sharp edges,  but you can also use a paper shredder. Some pet shops do sell paper bedding for rodents so look out for it, however it's probably way more expensive than plain old newsprint. I like using a mixture because the aspen shavings help dry out the cage, if you just use paper it tends to get soggy and stinky very quickly, the shavigs will help absorb this and deoderise the cage, the paper on top leaves a soft floor for them to walk on and acts as a barrier between the shavings which can be dusty and the rats (or hamsters in your case)

Oy, who's down thumbing, lots of the good answers are getting thumbs down. I've learned from experience this is the best combination, my first rats with just plain aspen got resperatory problems, then i used that corn beddig stuff which is too hard on their feet, so now i use a mix of aspen and paper and it works and I havent had respiratory problems with my last 5 rats (ive had 6 all together). Also there is no proof that they suffered from having newsprint paper (NOT NEWSPAPER...the thin non shiny paper often brown, often cheaply made thus isnt exposed to the same bleaches and chemicals to make it look perfect ) .

  10. ya, sure! but it gets stinky fast!

you could always use shredded paper

  11. no! do not! they chew enough of that stuff and they will die! the toxic ink chemicals will kill them! dont do it! you can use shredded plain paper if you shred it enough or paper towels or napkins but carefresh bedding is the best... dont buy cedar bedding tho! just buy aspen! good luck and noooooooo newspaper!

  12. yes,you may use newspaper...                ^_^
