Can i use "startled denial " to express people stating no shockingly ?

like if i ask a person r u atheist ? he looks at me in startled denial.

will this statement make sense?

Startled denial sounds more like a lie about something the speaker never expected to be accused of. Although I guess the atheist question could work if he was self conscious about it. Actually, yes, it does work.
