  1. Straw would be a little hard for the birds to properly arrange and then for the chicks.

    Lovebirds do very well at making their own nests if you give them materials. Palm leaves are favorites for shredding and placing in the nest if you can find some.

    I usually start with a layer of plain carefresh bedding in the bottom to ensure a soft, absorbent bottom, (some people use soft wood shavings like Aspen bedding - but never use cedar) then I let the parents rip apart shredable toys, palm leaves, plain paper, etc and arrange it inside the nest as they like. (They're going to toss out anything they don't like anyway and rearrange it)

  2. it's not very safe to use straw in a nest box, not only because of bugs, but also because it is a scratchier material, and may discourage the birds from using the nest box. you can by nest yarn at the pet store or you can shred paper up. make sure the pieces aren't to long or too short, about two inches is a good size. if the pieces are to long the birds wont be able to bring them to the cage, and too short is a choking hazard. whatever material you decide to use, make sure it's soft. birds in the wild use feathers... good luck!

  3. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Either use some wood shavings or a nest block. They prefer a nest block. You could put a little dried grass in the cage. You will bring in lice if you don't age the grass and debug it before you bring it in.

  4. Hi,

    No don't use straw, use;

    sawdust and perhaps hay.

    With lovebirds they build their own nests and chew the wood to build their nest, they don't really use an already built nest.
