Can i visit the usa before heading to canada?

Question

In winter this year im going to be working in Canada for a year. Am i able to fly into the USA possibly Las Vegas or Los Angeles, have posibly a week there and then head off to Canada?

I know about the max 3month stay in the USA and i will be carrying a year long working visa for Canada. So far i dont know what ticket to get, either a multi flight ticket and leaving from Canada, or if possible a return from the USA, even though the return date would be more then a year, or should i get a return date of less then 3 months and change it at a later date.

And when i cross into Canada will the visa ticket etc that is put into my passport when i arrive in the USA will this be taken out to show i have left the country?

Info from people who actually know would be welcome instead of a random guess

The I-94 that you receive from US Customs when you enter the US will be taken out by the Canadian Officer when you enter into Canada.  It is then stamped to show the date you left the US and turned back over to the US.
