Yes - and if you have a larger than average dong you'll be glad you did (it's less noticeable to others - which I think strangers appreciate - than going commando under them).

Other reasons: if you're going to be the trunks most of the day it's a lot more comfortable to have something on underneath, especially if you're walking, because nylon doesn't feel that good after a while (and often causes "nut-rash")

Also, if you're going to be in the ocean anywhere near jellies or sea lice (read: anywhere subtropical or tropical), a barrier to keep  stingly, clingy organisms off your bits is highly preferred to itchy or painful stings down there.

I typically wear a pair of lightweight nylon biking shorts under my trunks when surfing or if I'm going to have them on all day.  At the pool I just live large and try to impress everyone.  ha.

You can but your board shorts better be hiked up high.  Wearing underwear under your boardshorts is like wearing booties with a spring suit, like wearing a black suit but wearing white socks, like telling everyone in the lineup you're the biggest kook within a 20mile stretch.  If you must, just don't go out in the water and surf.  Stay on the beach where you can look like you're just wearing board shorts.

You can but they are not designed that way and most don't.  Boardshorts are typically made of a material that doesn't hold much water keeping them lighter and more flexible while you surf, swim, wakeboard, whatever.  Wearing underwear will just add extra weight and potentially be uncomfortable if it rides up.  I buy my boardshorts fit to size so they don't slouch on me and thus I never need to have anything under them.  If anything, I would suggest wearing a Speedo or a similar sort of water apparel if you have to wear something under them.
